Midas Muffler was born during the golden age of the automobile through the visionary efforts of one man: Nate Sherman. Mr. Sherman knew that the rapid rise of automobile sales in the 1950’s was going to usher in numerous changes in the way people needed those cars serviced. He knew that Mom and Pop service stations were not going to be able to handle the demand for service in a quick and efficient manner that people expected. At the time, Mr. Sherman was the owner of a family business in Chicago that made mufflers. With this background, he decided to open a different type of service station — one that offered just one thing — muffler repair. He thought the best model for this new approach was the franchise model: to have many independent businesses all over the country that were supported by one central home office operation.

So, he created the Muffler Installation Dealers Association (MIDAS) and cast about looking for the first franchisee. His friend Hugh Landrum came to mind and pretty soon Macon, Georgia saw the very first Midas Muffler shop become a reality.

One of the early keys to his success was a simple guarantee. He promised that if need be, as long as the person who had a Midas muffler installed still owned the car, the Midas muffler would be replaced for the life of the car. That certainly set him apart from other service stations and created a lot of buzz in the growing marketplace of automobile services.

Midas Muffler is found in 40 states

That buzz led to rapid growth and within a year, he had 100 shops in 40 states. Mr. Sherman was an astute marketer and knew that most people didn’t trust the people who fixed their cars. He knew that lots of people experienced poor service and thought that many times they were being overcharged or being told they needed repairs when in reality they did not.

So, to cast a new light on his shops, he told them to bring the customer out into the service bay and educate and inform them about what the repair work being done. Plus, in a stroke of genius, he came up with the idea that the Midas Muffler shops install large windows overlooking the service bays from which the customer could watch the repairs to their car!

Pies & RV’s

Expansion seemed a natural progression for Midas Muffler stores, and in addition to shock absorbers, at one point the company started selling recreation vehicles and, of all things, pies! The pies and RV’s quickly became a footnote in Midas Muffler history, but Midas has expanded into tires, suspension, batteries, climate control, preventive maintenance, oil changes and, of course, their signature brake service.

Today there are well over 2,500 Midas shops operated around the world, offering their brand of fast, efficient, superior service to the automotive public the world over.
